Susana Mendoza for Mayor Announces Campaign Manager Nicole DeMont

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Susana Mendoza for Mayor announced the hiring of campaign manager Nicole DeMont. DeMont is an accomplished political operative who has managed races across the country, including leading Congresswoman-elect Mucarsel-Powell to a come from behind victory to defeat incumbent Congressman Carlos Curbelo in Florida’s 26th congressional district. The race was the most expensive House race of 2018, with over $35 million spent in total.

“I am thrilled that Nicole will be leading my campaign for mayor,” said Susana Mendoza. “Nicole has a proven track record of building grassroots organizations across the country, and I know she will do the same here in Chicago. With her managing this campaign, I’m confident we can rise above the status quo candidates to elect a mayor who is focused on the next generation, not just the next four years.”

“Susana Mendoza is exactly the mayor Chicago needs, and I am so excited to be joining her campaign,” said Nicole DeMont. “She is a dynamic, energetic leader who fights tirelessly for the values she believes in. I can’t wait to work side by side with her as we build a movement to elect the first Latina mayor of Chicago.”

A graduate of Stanford University, Nicole is also a veteran of both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) independent expenditure and coordinated campaign. DeMont joined the Mucarsel-Powell campaign three-and-a-half months before election day, and quickly moved the race from “lean Republican” to an eventual victory. Mucarsel-Powell will be the first Latina Democrat to represent the state of Florida and the first Hispanic immigrant from South America elected to Congress.

Petition Challenge Continues to go Susana Mendoza’s Way

Toni Preckwinkle withdraws bogus challenges on missing and duplicate petition pages and withdraws errors in their challenge to the “first to sign petition” issue today, on top of last week’s defeat on false pattern of fraud accusations

CHICAGO, IL – The petition challenge process against Susana Mendoza continues to trend in her favor as recent rulings from the Hearing Officer for the Chicago Electoral Board have now gone in her favor.

At a hearing on Sunday with the Hearing Officer for the Electoral Board, Mendoza’s team successfully narrowed the objections Toni Preckwinkle launched at Mendoza in two areas: both on faulty challenges on individual signatures on the “first to sign petition” issue and on unsubstantiated objections to missing and duplicate petition and on unsubstantiated objections to missing and duplicate petition pages. This builds on Mendoza’s win last Friday when the Hearing Officer threw out Preckwinkle’s insufficient claims about a pattern of fraud.

During the Sunday hearing, Preckwinkle’s team withdrew multiple deficiencies in their challenges.

“Today’s hearings showed that not only did Toni Preckwinkle’s team withdraw signature errors in their objections, but they also withdrew objections about missing and duplicate pages,” said Anthony Jacob, Mendoza’s attorney during the petition challenge. “This challenge has been rife with errors. We’re moving forward with the records exam and we’re confident that Ms. Mendoza will be on the ballot as a candidate for mayor.”

The Electoral Board will continue to proceed with the records examination which is on track to show she has more than enough signatures to get on the ballot and there will be a status hearing at 2 p.m. on Thursday..

Mendoza has said that while Preckwinkle has attempted to claim the progressive mantle in the race for mayor, her bogus petition challenge in the era of Trump and year of the woman is an attack on the democratic process. This is why Mendoza has called on Preckwinkle to give up her petition challenge to the four other women of color in this race. Those petition challenges, coupled with Preckwinkle’s cover-up of sexual harassment in her office and support of regressive taxes that place an even greater burden on Chicago families, are far more indicative of actions in her role as the boss of the party bosses than a progressive leader.

Susana Mendoza Calls on Toni Preckwinkle to Drop Petition Challenges on Four Other Women of Color as Bogus Petition Challenge Continues to Lean Mendoza’s Way

“I will be on the ballot for mayor as I have the resources to see this challenge through. I know it and Toni Preckwinkle knows it. But, this bully move by Toni Preckwinkle is about one thing: knocking women of color off the ballot who are standing in the way of her self-coronation in February. It’s shameful that the Chair of the Cook County Democratic Party, the highest-ranking woman in county government, in the Year of the Woman and the age of Trump, would try to silence the voices of five women of color. That’s why I’m calling on Toni Preckwinkle, the boss of the party bosses, to pull back her patronage army and drop the challenge to the petitions of the other four women of color in this race.”

Susana Mendoza Addresses City Club of Chicago

Unveils 50NEW Initiative to Bolster Underutilized Schools to Serve as Hubs in the Community, Support Students and Families and Curb Neighborhood Violence

CHICAGO, IL – This morning, Susana Mendoza addressed the City Club of Chicago, laying out her bold vision to shape Chicago for the next generation and put the city’s neighborhoods first. During the speech, Mendoza unveiled her 50NEW Initiative to rebuild public schools as strong academic centers and hubs of community activity that will also help address violence in Chicago’s neighborhoods.

50NEW is a comprehensive plan that would use extra space in existing neighborhood schools to offer daycare, supper for students, family services, job training, and more. Instead of closing schools, 50NEW would help transform them into community hubs where Chicago families can access a quality public education alongside the support services they need to thrive.

50 represents the community schools that will be created within existing, underutilized school buildings over the next eight years. NEW stands for Neighborhood Education Works reflecting the program’s steadfast commitment to building a strong public education system for the next generation.

“We have to think boldly and transformationally,” said Susana Mendoza. “Instead of asking which 50 schools we should close next, I’ll be focused on which 50 underutilized schools we should be doubling down on, turning them into true community hubs and stronger academic centers. I’m ready to get to work on our schools at every level, from the neighborhood school my son attends, to implementing my 50NEW Initiative to transform the most under-resourced neighborhoods in our city. I’m excited to work with all Chicagoans to shape our future together – a future based on a vision for the next generation, not just the next four years.”

WTTW Chicago Tonight | Silets, T. —

Susana Mendoza announced her candidacy for Chicago mayor just days after winning re-election as Illinois comptroller. (The announcement wasn’t a huge surprise – part of her mayoral campaign launch video accidentally leaked before Election Day.)

Mendoza originally won the comptroller’s seat in the 2016 special election to fill the remaining two years of the term held by late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka.

Now, Mendoza is facing a significant challenge by another front-runner in the mayoral race, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

Both Mendoza and Preckwinkle are the only two candidates in the field of 21 who ran in the November general election and subsequently announced their candidacies to become Chicago’s next mayor.

Preckwinkle has targeted the nominating petitions of Mendoza and four other women of color. Mendoza calls that bullying.

“I will be on the ballot for mayor as I have the resources to see this challenge through,” Mendoza said in a statement Sunday. “But, this bully move by Toni Preckwinkle is about one thing: knocking women of color off the ballot who are standing in the way of her self-coronation in February.

“It’s shameful that the Chair of the Cook County Democratic Party, the highest-ranking woman in county government, in the Year of the Woman and the age of Trump, would try to silence the voices of five women of color,” Mendoza continued. “I’m calling on Toni Preckwinkle, the boss of the party bosses, to pull back her patronage army and drop the challenge to the petitions of the other four women of color in this race.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Preckwinkle responded Monday. “There’s a process for getting on the ballot. You have to have 12,500 signatures. The rules are the same for everybody. Everybody has to meet that bar.”

Mendoza started her career in politics in 2001, when, at the age of 28, she was elected and sworn in as a state representative of the 1st District. She served in the Illinois House until 2011, when she was the first woman elected as Chicago city clerk, an office she held until 2016.

Mendoza joins Carol Marin to talk about her candidacy and the issues facing the city’s next mayor.

Mendoza for Mayor Crosses 12,500 Signature Threshold During Petition Challenge With Over 13,000 Petition Signatures and Counting

Calls on Preckwinkle to stop wasting taxpayer dollars

CHICAGO, IL — Today, Susana Mendoza’s campaign announced that, based on the current status of the records exam, their count shows more than 13,000 valid ballot petition signatures, with almost half of the challenged signatures still left to review. The number puts Mendoza far above the 12,500 required signatures to appear on the February ballot.

The announced numbers highlight the political motivations of Toni Preckwinkle’s desperate attempt to knock Mendoza and four other women of color off the ballot while draining taxpayer money.

“As we’ve said from the start, Susana Mendoza will be on the ballot,” said Susana Mendoza for Mayor Campaign Manager Nicole DeMont. “Preckwinkle’s petition challenge is nothing more than a desperate political attack made by a party boss willing to waste taxpayer dollars to maintain her grip on power.”

Susana Mendoza Defeats Preckwinkle’s Bogus Petition Challenge

Toni Preckwinkle drops challenge after Mendoza proves well over the 12,500 verified signatures required to get on the ballot

From Susana Mendoza for Mayor Campaign Manager Nicole DeMont:

“Today Susana’s opponent decided to drop her bogus petition challenge that she knew was nothing more than an attempt at a self-coronation and a complete waste of nearly $1 million in taxpayer dollars. The boss of the party bosses desperately tried to keep Susana out of the race and she failed. Despite what boss Preckwinkle hoped, there will be an election and voters will hold her accountable for her record of raising taxes first and providing transparency last.  Her political games are exactly why Chicago needs a mayor focused on the next generation, instead of just the next four years.”

10 Questions Left Unanswered by Toni Preckwinkle

CHICAGO, IL — After a tumultuous week filled with contradictions, evasions, and an ever-changing story around the illegal campaign contribution she received from Ed Burke’s alleged extortion scheme, Toni Preckwinkle still needs to come clean to voters. With rumors swirling around the FBI investigation she’s implicated in, here are 10 questions party boss Toni Preckwinkle has left unanswered about her latest ethics scandal:

  1. Did she or did she not accept the $10,000 contribution from Ed Burke’s extortion scheme? (1)
  2. If not, why did she file an amended A-1 to report the contribution?
  3. If she did, will Preckwinkle hold anyone accountable for failing to report the contribution in violation of campaign finance laws?
  4. Why does Preckwinkle’s account of returning the full $10,000 contradict the FBI’s criminal complaint stating she kept $5,600? (2)
  5. What other contributions is Preckwinkle hiding from voters?
  6. Why won’t Preckwinkle release the full email correspondence with Mr. Dhanani? (3)
  7. Will Preckwinkle take action to ban outside employment for county board members?
  8. Will Preckwinkle and her team release all emails, texts, and other communications they had with Ed Burke and his staff in relation to the fundraiser?
  9. If Toni Preckwinkle did nothing wrong, why did she tell four whoppers in one day?
  10. Time and again, Preckwinkle has been busted lying to the public about her multiple ethics scandals. Why should voters believe her and not the FBI? (4)

“Toni Preckwinkle has evaded question after question in a desperate attempt to dodge accountability for the illegal $10,000 contribution she received from Ed Burke’s extortion scheme,” said Susana Mendoza for Mayor spokesman Christian Slater. “She needs to come clean to voters before the FBI catches her in another lie.”

###

  1. Preckwinkle and her team have given multiple answers as to whether she accepted the contribution, initially claiming they did not, then claiming they received the donation through their website, and reporting the contribution.
  2. Preckwinkle claims to have returned the full $10,000, while the FBI’s criminal complaint claims she kept $5,600.
  3. Preckwinkle has email correspondence between her team and the victim of Burke’s extortion scheme, but refused to release the emails with a spokesman saying, “we’re going to hold off on that.”
  4. Preckwinkle’s whoppers come as she lied to the public about her chief of staff’s sexual harassment and has questions swirling around her security chief’s illegal use of a government car for political purposes.

LIUNA Chicago represents a diverse group of over 20,000 working men and women in the construction, municipal, and industrial sectors. Bill Daley Desperately Attempts to Distance Himself from Bruce Rauner’s Disastrous Education Record

CHICAGO, IL– At a press conference today, Bill Daley announced his education plan while failing to mention his support for Bruce Rauner, who repeatedly attacked Chicago Public Schools, its teachers, and students.

Daley chaired the transition team for Bruce Rauner, the same failed governor who called Chicago Public School teachers “virtually illiterate” and Chicago schools “crumbling prisons,” held school funding hostage, and demonized Chicago and its students to downstate voters. In a stark contrast, Susana Mendoza played a leading role fighting for historic school funding reform with State Senator Andy Manar while holding Rauner accountable for his disastrous record.

“Bill Daley supported a failed governor who held Chicago Public Schools hostage to force his far-right agenda on Illinois while attacking and demagoguing Chicago Public Schools,” said Susana Mendoza for Mayor spokesman Christian Slater. “Susana will be a mayor who fights relentlessly for neighborhood schools and won’t back down until every child gets a quality public education.”

“They said, “coach, she’s a girl.” I said, “yeah, I know, but she’s the best player I have.”

Susana:
When people tell me I can’t do something, it just motivates me even more.

Now they say the problems of guns, schools and taxes are impossible for the next mayor to solve.

To me, nothing is impossible.

Susana Mendoza Statement on Jason Van Dyke Sentencing

CHICAGO, IL – Susana Mendoza released the following statement on today’s Jason Van Dyke sentencing:

“While a historic step forward was taken when a jury convicted Jason Van Dyke of the murder of Laquan McDonald, today’s lenient sentence did not fit the severity of the crime. The fact is that our prisons are populated with individuals serving longer sentences for much lesser crimes. While many are justifiably disappointed with this sentence, this has nonetheless sent a message to police officers that if they break the law, there will be consequences. As mayor, I will work tirelessly to rebuild the broken trust between police and our communities to heal our city. Today is just a start. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Bill Daley Receives $25,000 From Nephew Robert Vanecko Who Squandered Over $50 Million in Pension Fund Money

CHICAGO, IL – In a Friday news dump, Bill Daley revealed his campaign accepted a $25,000 donation from the notorious Robert Vanecko, who lost Chicago taxpayers over $50 million in a botched investment scheme.

Vanecko, the nephew of former mayor Richard M. Daley, received an investment of $68 million from Chicago pension funds, only to lose the teacher, police officer, and municipal employee funds over $50 million. At the same time, Vanecko’s company charged $9 million in fees for their costly mismanagement. The association with the failed investment comes as Bill Daley has endorsed previous disastrous deals, including the city’s failed parking meter privatization.

“Robert Vanecko got rich while losing over $50 million in pension funds for Chicago teachers, police and municipal employees, and apparently Bill Daley thinks that’s ‘good business,” Susana Mendoza for Mayor spokesman Christian Slater said. “Chicagoans can’t afford a mayor like Bill Daley who doesn’t stand for their middle class values, led a big bank during the financial collapse of Wall Street, got rich as a CEO as he laid off thousands of workers, and thinks it’s ok to take money from those who squandered over $50 million in taxpayer dollars while hiding his tax returns from voters.”
